Girl Guides National Volunteer Week → Freelance Motion Graphic Designer
April 16 - 22, 2023 is National Volunteer Week, an annual event recognizing the valuable contribution of volunteers and acknowledging their achievements. Girl Guides of Canada (GGC), one of the largest networks of female volunteers in the country with over 20,000 volunteers, provides young women with unique experiences to develop skills and expertise that enhance professional opportunities. To celebrate National Volunteer Week, I partnered with GGC to create a motion graphic video thanking volunteers for all that they do to craft memorable experiences and empowering moments for girls and women across Canada.

The most exciting part of working as a freelancer is being able to leverage the design thinking techniques from my day job in other areas of work. As someone who started out as a graphic designer intern at GGC before becoming their freelance motion graphic designer, I am fortunate to have had multiple opportunities to work with their marketing and design team. This has allowed me to explore what effective cross-functional collaboration can look like in different settings and roles.

So what does leveraging design thinking techniques and collaborating cross-functionally look like as a motion graphic designer? Well, I’ve come to understand the importance of adapting design thinking activities based on the team and scenario at hand to ensure that everyone’s asking the right questions and narrowing down the right problems and opportunities. Secondly, to push for a focus on the longevity of what we design so that our values and principles continue to come across to people not just today, but in the years to come. This has involved bringing team members together to brainstorm a range of creative concepts for the video and me drafting up quick and messy sketches to get feedback on some of the initial ideas. We’ve also implemented internal testing where I collect feedback from employees and volunteers to guide the direction of my revisions. Altogether, I’m always delighted to take on different freelance projects to develop skills in other areas adjacent to UX design.
